At John Watson School, our core curriculum is based on the National Curriculum but is carefully adapted to meet the individual needs of our learners. We prioritise enabling pupils to develop secure understanding and meaningful application of key skills and knowledge. Learning is organised through a topic-based approach, allowing concepts to be explored in rich, connected ways that promote engagement and relevance.

An adapted Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework is used from Reception through to Year 2, recognising that many of our pupils are still developing the skills required to become effective learners. Building independence begins here and remains central to all teaching throughout the school. Abstract concepts are taught in concrete, practical ways, ensuring accessibility and understanding for all.

A significant part of the curriculum focuses on life skills, supporting pupils to develop independence, confidence and functional understanding. Progress is tracked through Evidence for Learning (EfL), where annotated evidence from observations, workbooks, videos and photos captures each learner’s journey. This system allows for rich, multimedia assessment records that reflect progress across all areas.
Individual therapy programmes are embedded into the school day for identified pupils, with any required interventions integrated into the curriculum. Frequent opportunities for repetition and reinforcement are built into all learning experiences to support mastery and retention.

We use a Total Communication Approach, ensuring that every pupil can understand, express themselves and participate fully in school life. The impact of the curriculum is continually monitored through a rigorous quality assurance process, including pupil progress meetings, work scrutiny, lesson observations and learner voice. Findings from these processes, alongside assessment data, demonstrate the effectiveness of our implementation and guide ongoing improvement.
Read, Write, Inc. (RWI) is a structured phonics-based literacy programme adapted in our school to support our pupils in developing essential reading and writing skills. It provides a clear, consistent approach to teaching early literacy through small, carefully planned steps and regular repetition, helping pupils build confidence and independence.
The programme focuses on teaching sounds and blending skills to enable pupils to read words and simple sentences. Lessons are delivered at an appropriate pace, with additional modelling, visual supports and opportunities for overlearning to ensure all pupils can access and retain new knowledge.
Teaching is closely matched to individual needs. Through this tailored approach, Read, Write, Inc. helps our pupils to develop functional literacy skills, increase their confidence and enjoyment of reading, and make meaningful progress from their individual starting points.
